WHO ARE WE?
Started in September 2019, terARTai is a small business that works together with special needs communities, especially those who has autism, down syndrome and cerebral palsy.
We conceptualise and co-create artworks with them, where each artworks represent their aspirations and point of view.
We then turn these artworks into wearable pieces, and also merchandises like wedding souvenirs or corporate merchandises.
*Part of our revenue is contributed back to our special artists.
WHAT DRIVES US TO DO WHAT WE DO?
We believe that everything is created to fulfil certain purpose in this world. When the founders created terARTai, they had a question at the back of their heads, "is this it? what's next?". The founders were working their corporate jobs full time, and wondering whether this was the lives that they were meant to live. They decided to take some time off, and did some volunteering that led them to visit Kyriakon Special Needs School in South Jakarta. Over there, they realised that there were so many adults special-needs students who actually came back to school because they had no where to go.
The school, as well as, their families were running out of ideas of "what's next" for these adult students too. At the same time, these students also expressed their frustrations to their teachers and families that they felt purposeless due to their disabilities because they think that they will forever be a burden, although they want to be able to contribute to the society -- and to even become independent one day.
This moved us to motivate them by co-creating artworks with them, where each artworks can tell a little bit of who they are and their expression. and we hope that as their artworks are transformed into something useful, they become more hopeful and closer to understanding their reasons for living.
